Harvey Cedars Police Programs

Winter House Check

Because of our decreased population in the winter, the police department offers a program to have your residence periodically checked over the winter while you are away. Officers will makes checks weekly on your residence and we will notify you if we find open doors, water leaks or any suspicious activity around your residence. We offer this at no charge.  This program is active between October 15th and May 30th. During this time officers are randomly checking unoccupied residences even if they are not on our list. We encourage  all residents that are away during the winter months to register. The registration must be updated every year in the fall.

Bicycle Registration Program

Bicycle theft has been on the increase on Long Beach Island . As the price for new bicycles increases each year, their resale value also increases. In recent years, more than 75% of owners who reported their bicycles stolen to the Police Department did not know the serial number stamped into the frame of their bicycle.

Most manufacturers stamp an individual serial number into each bicycle before it leaves the factory. Serial number and specific descriptive information is crucial if police are to identify recovered bicycles and locate rightful owners.

The Harvey Cedars Police Department has developed a program to combat this problem. This bicycle registration program is available to any bicycle owner. Registration takes only minutes to complete.
Owner and bicycle information will be recorded and maintained in a computer database for future use if it is needed in the event of a theft. A tamper-resistant numbered registration sticker will be provided to be affixed to your bicycle frame to make identification by police easier.

Registration may provide the only means of returning a stolen bicycle once it is recovered by police. Many bicycles are recovered without ever finding the owners. With the recorded information police can make police departments nationwide aware that a particular bicycle is stolen.

If you own a bicycle that is not registered in this program, you are encouraged to bring your bicycle and personal identifying information to the police department during normal business hours or visit our Special Operations unit at any public event throughout the summer.
